Hungarian born composer Franz Liszt was the most romantic of romantic composers. He led the life and career of a pop star as a travelling piano virtuoso. In his early forties he abandoned this life, and devoted himself to conducting and composing. All his life he was influenced by the other arts, painting and, above all, literature. The figure of Faust, tempted by the devil, fascinated him immensely as it draws a parallel to his own life, and it is no wonder that he created a symphony in which the three main characters from Goethe´s play, Faust, Gretchen and Mephistofeles, are captured in music, a music full of drama, imagination and depth of feeling.
Also Dante´s Divina Commedia has been travelling with Liszt all his life. The symphony he wrote follows the poems of the great Dante, the Inferno and the Purgatorio, concluding with a moving Magnificat.
Great, revolutionary symphonic works, of colossal proportions, here impressively performed by the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin under Eliahu Inbal (an original Denon recording!) and the Netherlands Philharmonic under the flaming baton of Hartmut Haenchen.
