商品説明

I puritani (The Puritans) is an opera in three acts by Vincenzo Bellini. It was his last opera. It's libretto is by Count Carlo Pepoli, based on Tetes rondes et Cavaliers by Jacques-Francois Ancelot and Joseph Xavier Saintine, which is in turn based on Walter Scott's novel Old Mortality. It was first produced at the Theatre-Italien in Paris, 24 January 1835. At the same time, Bellini composed an alternative version intended for the famous Maria Malibran, who was to sing it in Naples; she died exactly a year to the day after the composer, and so this version was not performed on stage until 10 April 1986 at the Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari, with Katia Ricciarelli. The premiere performance in January 1835 was a triumph in which the top-class line-up played a major role (Grisi, Rubini, Tambourine and Lablache). Elvira's madness scene made many of the audience cry and by the end of the second act- following the freedom duet Suoni la tromba-everybody was up their feet. Bellini had to appear on stage to calm down the enthusiastic crowds by accepting their enormous ovations. I Puritani broke all records. Everywhere in Europe the opera was a huge success. Just after the premiere Bellini died at the young age of 34 and the Bel Canto opera's slowly disappeared all from the important stages. Maria Callas played an important role in the revival of opera's such as I Puritani. This important reissue with Mariella Devia and William Matteuzi under the baton of Richard Bonynge was recorded in 1999.
