解説書には、戦闘的な演奏は聞き手の耳を疲弊させるが、エデルマンのショパンはそのような演奏とは一線を画すという主旨のことが記載されているが、私の印象はこれとは全く逆。低音を売り物にしているためだろうが、いたるところ打鍵が強すぎて、剛腕の格闘家が音楽をねじ伏せている感じ。中音も高音も平板で、もっと流麗で、詩情豊かなショパンを聴きたかった。

エデルマンが録音を再開して３枚目のＣＤであるが、正に満を持しての得意のショパンの作品集ということが出来るだろう。そして、その演奏内容は、我々の期待を決して裏切ることがない、堂々たる名演であった。エデルマンは、５０歳に到達しようかという、漸く中堅に差し掛かろうという年齢であるが、とてもそうとは思えないような円熟の至芸を聴かせてくれる。打鍵も力強く、テクニックも卓越したものがあるが、それでいて、抒情的な箇所の歌い方も決して甘くはならず、高踏的な気品を湛えており、これほどまでに格調の高いショパンは、最近ではほとんど珍しいと言えるのではないだろうか。いずれの曲も名演であるが、特に舟歌、幻想曲、そして幻想ポロネーズの３曲は、これら各曲のベストを争う名演と高く評価したい。エデルマンのショパンについて、本盤以外の曲もいろいろと聴きたくなったという聴き手は、私だけではないはずである。エクストンのＳＡＣＤはいつもながら極上の音質であるが、惜しいのはマルチチェンネルがない点。エクストンには、この場を借りて、マルチチャンネルの復活を強く望んでおきたい。
