ロットの交響曲からは良く知られた作曲家の作風に似たところが多く聴かれます。特にマーラーからの「真似？」と思えるところが散見されるのですが、実はこの曲の作曲年は1878～80年なのです。マーラーの交響曲第一番は1883～88年です。マーラーを10年も先取りしているわけです。マーラーもブラームスもロットを強くライバル視し、自分の未来を映す鏡のようなロットを恐れ、無視したり徹底的に酷評したりし、ついにロットは発狂して自殺。先に才能を発揮しすぎた天才の悲劇といえるかもしれません。もし、マーラーとブラームスの「いじめ」にあわなかったら、どんなすごい作品群を残してくれただろうかとか、いろいろ思いを巡らせてしまいますが、そういうことを忘れて「マーラーのほうが後なのですよ」ということだけ頭の片隅に置いて曲を味わうのが健全かもしれません。録音も新しく演奏も特に第一楽章がのびやかで聴きやすいものに仕上がっています。
