Freddie Hubbard's first recording as a leader, Open Sesame features the 22-year-old trumpeter in a quintet with tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, the up-and-coming pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Clifford Jarvis. This set shows that even at this early stage, Hubbard had the potential to be one of the greats. On the ballad But Beautiful he shows maturity; other highlights include Open Sesame, a driving All or Nothing at All and One Mint Julep. It's an impressive start to what would be a very interesting career. [The 2002 Blue Note re-release includes two bonus tracks: alternate takes of Open Sesame and Gypsy Blue.] ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

    ハバードのブルーノート初録音盤で、初リーダーアルバム。ハバードが溌剌としたトランペット演奏を聴かせる名盤。ブルックス作曲のアルバムタイトル曲「オープン・セサミ」、ハバード作曲の「ハブズ・ナブ」等、名曲揃い。哀愁のメロディの「ジプシー・ブルー」も心に染みる。

    ①は何て日本人の心をくすぐるメロディなんでしょう…。何かいつもコレ聴くたびに泣きそうになっちゃうんです。③といい、ティナの創る曲は正に「演歌」です。（褒めてます）フレディともに歌心がありますが、ソロに入るとこれまた2人主張しあって良い！ これを聴いた後は同じフロントでティナのリーダーアルバム、「トゥルー・ブルー」も併せて聴いてくだされ！さらに楽しめますまんねん。追記すると、唯一フレディオリジナル⑥も彼のこれからを想起させる1曲！

    冒頭＃１はアートブレーキーのモザイクを髣髴とさせる。 何時聞いても、＃２でのブルックスのソロはうっとりしてしまう。そのほかの楽曲も素晴らしいの一言ですね。若き天才ハバードの真骨頂が如何なく発揮された名演が詰まったＢＮの至高の一枚!是非、！
