数多くある交響曲の中でも最も「コテコテに暑苦しい」というに相応しい、熱っぽい展開が魅力のブラ1をピアノ連弾で弾いたらどうなるか？　その答えがここにあります。例えばこの曲のトレードマークの一つである第1楽章冒頭のように、粘りのある持続音や深みのあるティンパニの打ち込みといった、ピアノという楽器を用いる限り、4本の手と20本の指を駆使してもその熱っぽさを再現するのが難しい場面もないことはありません。しかしそれでも、一つ一つの音がオーケストラよりもはるかに明晰に響くというピアノ連弾ならではの特性が、何やら音符がやたら群れているという、原曲とはまた一味違った暑苦しさを現出させているのがユニークといえるでしょう。

    ブラームスの一番の魅力を「和声」の美しさだと感じている私にとっては、ブラ1をピアノで聴けるとは最高の福音でした。期待以上のすばらしさで、とくに第2楽章には涙がでました。ここでのデュオは、祈りに満ちた楽想にとらえ、品格にあふれています。ブラームスを愛し抜いていないと、こんな仕事はできないでしょう。純粋無垢に突き進む「勝利の歌」にも感動しました。ブラームスの音楽はピアノの進化ととてもつながりが深いような気がします。
