Here is the Mahler enchanter. The selections from Des Knaben Wunderhorn are the composer’s take on folk tunes, playful and touching. The Songs of a Wayfarer (Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen) tell of young love lost. And the Ruckert settings are, in a word, gorgeous. Hear Susan Graham and Thomas Hampson, two of today’s great Mahler singers, as they join Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony in this final album of the award-winning MTT/SFS Mahler cycle.

ティルソン・トーマスによるマーラーの交響曲全集は、昨年発売の第８を持って終了したものと思っていた。その第８は至高の超名演であり、過去の第８の名演の中でもトップの座を争うものであっただけに、なおさらのこと、チクルスの有終の美を飾るものと考えたのであった。しかしながら、本盤も、第８に勝るとも劣らぬ名演であり、その意味では、本盤こそ正真正銘の、チクルスの有終の美を飾る至高・至純の超名演と言えるだろう。ティルソン・トーマスのマーラーは、オーケストラを無理なく鳴らし、いささかの嫌みもあざとさもなく、マーラーがスコアに記した音符を、いささかも無機的に陥らず、内容豊かに表現している点が素晴らしい。このように記すと、現在チクルスが進行中のマーツァルのアプローチと似通った点があるのかもしれない。両者の違いは、私見ではあるが、マーツァルが、マーラーをボヘミア出身の作曲家として捉え、チェコ・フィルとともにいささかローカルな味わいを見せることがあるのに対して、ティルソン・トーマスは、あくまでも２１世紀の新しいマーラー像を指向している点にあるのではないかと考える。歌手陣もいずれも素晴らしく、ＳＡＣＤマルチチャンネルによる極上の高音質も、本盤の価値を大いに高めるのに貢献している。5 people agree with this review

録音がすばらしい上、歌が非常に美しくＳＡＣＤ化が成功した演奏。ハンプソンが特にいい。原光の男性版が聞けるがこれはやはり女性のほうが○。 値段はちょっと高いが買って損はない一枚。1 people agree with this review

最も良いのはハンプソンの歌う『角笛』からの5曲で、劇的な表情が曲に合っている。彼はオケ伴での『角笛』歌曲集の録音はなかったので、できれば全曲録音してほしかったところだが、所詮はこれまでの落ち穂拾い録音、それは無理なのかもしれない。『さすらう若人の歌』はかのバーンスタインとVPO以来の録音。こちらは細やかな表情で歌っているが、室内楽的で精妙な伴奏はこれまでのシリーズ通り。第2曲、第4曲の終わりで一瞬にして明から暗に転じる和声の変化のつかまえ方は見事だ。『リュッケルト歌曲集』はシェーファー/エッシェンバッハの恐ろしく明晰で緻密な演奏を聴いたばかりなので、やや分が悪いが、あれはちょっと異例なほどの出来なので、グラハムの大柄な歌も決して悪いわけではない。3 people agree with this review
