    確かに素晴らしい楽曲は多いのだが…後半のぬるい感じは何なんだろうね。前半の流れが素晴らしいだけに残念だ。露骨なﾃﾞｼﾞﾛｯｸ路線は封印したかもしれないが、原点回帰とは言わないね。円熟や余裕による変化は作品の質感に大きな影響を落としている。

    まずどなたも断定されていない「一番大切な事実」から書きますね。 「Walk On」はU2キャリア最高楽曲です。 9.11同時多発テロの追悼番組で、衛星中継で出演したU2の映像はモノクロでした。「Peace On Earth」の一節を歌った後で披露されたこの「Walk On」はアメリカ国民にとって、どのアメリカのアーティストの歌よりも意義ある楽曲として響いたのです。 90年代を”最新鋭きどり”で自らをパロディの対象として演じった彼らが、当たり前のU2の音楽を奏でた結果が『アクトン・ベイビー』に次ぐ傑作となりました。

    '00年発表｡ﾃﾞﾋﾞｭｰ21年目を迎えたU2の通算10枚目のｽﾀｼﾞｵ･ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑだ｡"本作は初期の頃の彼らに戻ってるよ"｡どこからともなくそんな話が耳に入っていたので､今作を聴く前にあらためて既発ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑを全部聴き返すことにした｡初期と後期のﾗｲﾝ引きには少々抵抗を感じるが､ﾎﾞﾉのﾎﾞｰｶﾙで考えれば､ｼﾝﾌﾟﾙなｻｳﾝﾄﾞをﾊﾞｯｸに力強さが前面に出ていた80年代､ﾊｲﾊﾟｰ･ｻｳﾝﾄﾞの中を泳ぐﾛｯｸ･ｽﾀｰを気取っていた(意図的な)90年代と区別するのがわかりやすいだろうか｡それを前提に今作に耳を傾けると"初期に戻った"と感じるのは､なるほど､と頷ける｡しかし､原点回帰とうたってしまうにはあまりに単純すぎるだろう｡あたりまえだが､この作品が今ここに在るのは過去の作品があってこそだ｡全12曲を楽曲単位で吟味すれば､そこには間違いなく｢ﾎﾞｰｲ｣(80年)も｢ﾖｼｭｱ･ﾄｩﾘｰ｣(87年)も｢ｱｸﾄﾝ･ﾍﾞｲﾋﾞｰ｣(91年)も｢POP｣(97年)の要素も混在している｡彼らは決して自分たちの過去を否定することなく､現時点で演りたいことを体現した｡その結果､根強いﾌｧﾝの大方が支持する"U2らしいｻｳﾝﾄﾞ"になったに過ぎないのだ｡ ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ･ﾀｲﾄﾙを直訳すれば｢置き忘れてはいけないもの｣になる｡｢もの｣の解釈は､歌､LOVE､結束力､未来指向……と様々だが､それはﾘｽﾅｰ個々が感じたものが正しいだろう｡それでも､ｼﾞｬｹｯﾄ写真が空港ﾛﾋﾞｰというのは感慨深い｡出発と帰着､別れと再会の場であることに変わりはないからだ｡
