HMV Review

This is the soundtrack of a Japanese animation film written and directed by filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea". The plot centers on a goldfish princess Ponyo, who desperately wants to be a human. The soundtrack was done by Joe Hisaishi, it contains 40 tracks including "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" and "Mother of Sea".

    主題歌「崖の上のポニョ」を筆頭に、作品にも音楽にも、全体的に「となりのトトロ」がもっていた雰囲気へと回帰しようとしている節が見受けられる。作画が手書きで、キャラクターもあまり大人びていない点などから、映像はそれに成功しているといえるが、音楽には少し違和感が残る。おそらく、大がつくほどのオーケストラを編成してしまったのがその理由だ。時代が違うからと言ってしまえばそれまでだが、「トトロ」っぽい雰囲気は、何も百人体制の音楽でなくても表現できるのだ。むしろ、表面的には寂しいくらいの編成規模の方が、ハートウォーミングな味が出たのではないだろうか。広大な海が舞台なら、音楽だって大編成にしたい気持ちも分からないでもない、が。
