HMV Review

An improbable collaboration between a Serbian post-rock band called Cinc and a Japanese steel drummer named Yoshio Machida, Walk with the Penguin's Steal a Spoon for You is every bit as willfully quirky as its name, but it's an endearing blend of playfulness, atmospherics, and experimentalism regardless. Reminiscent both of the Canterbury prog acts of the 1970s (Hatfield and the North in particular) and of the more playful side of contemporary post-rock (Plone and the Stereolab offshoots Turn On and Imitation Electric Piano both come immediately to mind), Walk with the Penguin describe their own music as fizzy, which indeed is the perfect adjective for the effervescence of tunes like the opening You Come Out Young. Singer Irena Vanic occasionally recalls Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier and Yo La Tengo's Georgia Hubley in her endearing deadpan style, although her surreal, often hilarious lyrics (Irvas is about an elderly woman's sudden decision to live her life dressed as a man) are uniquely her own. Similarly, the blend of mutated electronics, Eastern European folk forms, and Caribbean steel drums is unlike just about anything else out there. A high tolerance for whimsy is required, but for those with the correct mindset, Steal a Spoon for You is an utter delight. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
