初回盤発売当初は必ずしも良い評価ではなかったCD。今、考えてみても、この版でCSOとメサイアを録音する意味があったのかと思しまうのですが・・・。何せ金管が売りの一つだったCSOなのに、ハレルヤまでは金管が出てこないし、出てくる金管もトランペットのみ。ショルティーはこの録音の際にホグウッドに相談したというのも面白い逸話です。この時期CSOはマーラーを入れていたというだけに、合唱は高いレベルあると思います。ショルティーは極めて率直に、この大曲にアプローチしています。それはハレルヤのテンポ設定に現れています。本家の古楽のピノックや、最近ではアーノンクールの再録などと比べると、本当に直線的なテンポの運び。この演奏が頭から離れない小生は、ハレルヤ迷子になってしまってます。とにかく古楽演奏以上にテンポ設定が古楽っぽい、この演奏は捨てがたい魅力があります。難点はレチタティーヴォとアリアのトラックが一緒になっている曲が何曲かあること。確かにレチタティーヴォの十数秒とか、数十秒そこそこに1トラックと言うのは贅沢なことかもしれないですが。0 people agree with this review

年末にメサイアを演奏するための勉強用に学生の頃散々聴いたＣＤ。、音も良く現代的なメサイアとしては現在も最高峰ではないか。それにしてもハーセスだと思うけど、あまりに素晴らしいトランペットで（笑）、私の様なアマチュアのトランペット吹きとしては参考にならないほどすごい。バロックを前面に出した演奏より、こうした現代的なメサイアの方が私は好きだ。1 people agree with this review

前からショルティは高い意味での中庸の指揮者だと考えていたが、このメサイヤはそのことを納得させてくれる名演だ。短めのフレージングと硬質なリズム、歌詞の重要語句に強いアクセントを与え、それらを洗練された管弦楽演奏に乗せて朗々と響かせている。大編成物に無類の力を発揮するショルティらしい演奏だ。逼塞気味のモダン・オケの指揮者たち、勇気を出してバロックを壮大に奏でよ！2 people agree with this review
