    彼が4度目の全集録音を行ったのは、単なる思い付きではないはず。精神性解釈や演奏法の深まりによって、以前３回の録音とは全くことなった仕上がりになっている。彼が到達した境地である。たしかに7番は77年のものと比べれば、重量感と流麗さは劣るかもしれない。しかし、7番の終楽章は見事に表現しきっているように思える。すこしサバサバしたような感じがまた良い。巨匠の境地として聞くべし。

    帝王の第4は60年代のものが一番。70年代も、この80年代も鈍重な印象で好感が持てない。しかし第7は素晴らしい。晩年の帝王のつくりだす、スケールが大きく重厚な響きが速いテンポで駆けてゆく。「80年代のカラヤンは鈍重」と言う人がいるが、そうとも言い切れない。この第7は聴き終わった後、一種の快感を味わえる。
