1976年ステレオ録音。古楽界最大の先駆者のひとり、グスタフ・レオンハルト（1928‐）のチェンバロによる《ゴルトベルク》。繰り返しを行なっていないため、作品の構造がシンプルに際立つ上、レオンハルトの揺るぎない確固とした姿勢が音楽のすみずみにまで投影された名演です。
レオンハルトは《ゴルトベルク》を3度録音しており、当盤は3度目となる1976年収録（①1953年モノ、ヴァンガード②1965年テルデック）。レオンハルトは、手ざわりを確かめるようなセンシティヴィティをも備えつつ、ゆったりとしたテンポと堅固な構築で全曲を築き上げています。楽器のはずむように輝かしい音色がどこをとっても充実の極みをゆく、レオンハルトならではの「ゴルトベルク」です。
ブランシェ（パリ、1730年）をモデルとしたウィリアム・ダウドによる1975年製作のチェンバロを使用しています。中身はミドル・プライス商品。

レオンハルトのゴルトベルクは今後、再録音は望めないと思われるので、同時発売の平均律と共に待望のSACD化になった。平均律同様、今では珍しい超近接録音だが、その直接音と共に楽器そのものの響きがSACDではさらに生々しく再生されるようになった。アリアも含めて全て繰り返しなしで47分半という演奏時間は繰り返せば95分になるはず。そのゆったりとした流れに改めて時の経つのを忘れて聴き入らせてくれた。0 people agree with this review

一つ一つの変奏をまるで慈しむように、自分の知識と感性の全てを注ぎ込んで奏でています。音色の、旋律の、多声の端々から、15世紀のデュファイからバロックそして古典派に至る、音楽の様々な道がまるでパノラマのように繰り広げられます。レオンハルトのどこまでも作品に則して掘り下げてゆく演奏によって、初めて見えてくるヨーロッパ音楽の数百年の歴史が、あまりにも感動的です。まさにバッハ晩年の遺産ともいうべき曲であり、また人類の遺産ともいうべき演奏です。レオンハルトが再録音してくれたことに心から感謝します。0 people agree with this review
