解散説が流れる中､前作『ホテル･カリフォルニア』から3年ぶりの新作として発表された1979年の実質上のラスト作｡イーグルスは本作によって４作連続の全米ナンバー･ワンを獲得した｡本作でランディ･マイズナーに代わり､ティモシー･Ｂ･シュミットが参加｡またボブ･シーガー､Ｊ.Ｄ.サウザーが作者として名を連ねる⑥で再びグラミー受賞｡作品全体としてはやはり解散が影響したかのような暗いムードが漂う｡この後､イーグルスは82年に解散するが､94年に４曲の新曲とＭＴＶのスペシャルコンサートの模様を収めたライヴ音源から成る『ヘル・フリーゼズ･オーヴァー』を発表した｡

    輸入ﾘﾏｽﾀｰ盤は音圧が低いので国内ﾘﾏｽﾀｰ盤をｵｽｽﾒします!!前作の『ﾎﾃﾙ･ｶﾘﾌｫﾙﾆｱ』は輸入ﾘﾏｽﾀｰ盤でも大丈夫でしたがｺﾁﾗは要注意で紙ｼﾞｬｹ盤･ﾌﾟﾗ盤を問わず国内盤なら音圧が高くｽｯｷﾘしますよ(笑)

    前作が前作だけに、一般的には小粒となった印象を受けた本作か知れない。しかしながら自分としては本バンドで一番好きなアルバムかな。黒っぽい、夜といったアルバムジャケット、前作、前々作の大作から、ロック、シングル曲を意識した曲調、アルバム発売時の時代背景、大バンドが時代を捉えたそんな感じがした。世はディスコ、シンプルな楽曲が流行った時代、大作主義を継承しても売れたと思うが、そこは偉大なバンド、しっかり自分らの音楽を時代に繁栄させたところは流石。②は今でも本バンド最高の名バラードと思うし、③、⑥といったソリッドなアメリカンロックも捨てがたい。

    前作ほどガツンと来るものはないけれども、新加入のティモシー・シュミットの甘い声を生かした②はえらく印象に残る。彼らのラストにふさわしいアルバム。
