Spawning four hit singles, But Seriously topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. While pursuing much of the same formula as on No Jacket Required, there was also a move toward more organic production as Collins abandoned some of the drum machines and prominent keyboards in the up-tempo numbers in favor of live instrumentation. The decision was a good one as there's no doubt that tracks such as Find a Way to My Heart and Hang in Long Enough have enough bite to outlast his more dated sounding mid-80s material. As usual, there are a bit too many generic ballads here, but when Collins moves out of his formula as on the dramatic gospel-influenced I Wish it Would Rain Down, featuring Eric Clapton, the results are staggering. ~ Geoff Orens, Rovi

スミマセン、個人的には余り好みではないアルバムです。とは言ってもサウンドはより上質に仕上がっており完成度は流石に高いですな。内容がクソ真面目になったせいか全米でのセールスはメガヒットだった前作の３分の１程だったけれど、一方で前作よりもシングルを切りまくってましたねぇ・・・。前作が全般的にやけに派手だったのに対し、本作はシルキーで大人な内容で全く対照的になっておりますね。

前作の大ヒットを受けてもなお、更なる音楽才能を披露してくれたキャリア最高傑作。「アナザー・デイ・イン・パラダイス」（全米1位）でのデヴィッド・クロスビーの美しいハーモニーは涙モノ。また「雨にお願い」でのエリック・クラプトンのソロも名演中の名演。長尺かつ収録曲の多さを全く感じさせない高品質ぶりには、前作以上の大絶賛が寄せられましたね。チャート＆セールスのピークはここまででしたが、既にジェネシスでの大成功も含め”最高のソングライター”としての認識は十二分に果たせたのではないでしょうか。

この作品が出た当時、仕事で南欧に。同行していた某大物音楽評論家の方がこの作品に狂っていて、カセットを買わされ、移動の車中で死ぬほど聴かされた記憶がトラウマになっているものの、それを差し引いても作品的にはフィルのソロでは最高傑作と断言できます。実際に西欧各国でも馬鹿売れしていましたし、MTVでも嫌と言うほどO.Aされていましたので、もはや「傑作」と刷り込まれてしまっています。しかし密かに注目したことは、作品の内容以上に、ソロ1作目からジャケットを自分の顔のアップで押し通す根性です。
