感染すると凶暴性を引き起こし他の人間に襲いかかる恐るべき新種ウイルス“RAGE（レイジ）”の猛威からようやく再建が始まった28週後のロンドン。
スペイン旅行中で難を逃れたタミーとアンディの姉弟も無事帰国し、軍の厳重な監視下に置かれている第1街区で父親ドンと感動の再会を果たす。死亡した母の写真を取り戻すため第1街区を抜け出し我が家へ行くと、思いがけず生きている母アリスと再会する。
やがて軍医スカーレットの診断で、アリスがウイルスに感染しながらも発病していないキャリアだと判明、ワクチン開発への期待が膨らむが…
