このレビューはジャコ・パストリアスのTWINS I、IIのレビューからの続きです。大学を卒業し、晴れて大学院生となった夏、ライブ・アンダー・ザ・スカイで来日していたウェザー・リポートを福岡で観賞。人気メンバーだったジャコとアースキンが抜けて残念ではあった。しかしながらオマーハキムはバリバリであったし、外観は「こいつだいじょうぶやろか」と思わせたヴィクターベイリーも強靭なベースを披露してくれ、ホセロッシーも陽気ですばらしいステージを見せてくれた。プロセッションからわじわと盛り上げながら始まり、ザヴィヌルとハキムのバトルという見せ場も作ってくれた。後半では過去のナンバーもやってくれた。最後は総立ちとなったが、高校時代から密かに好きだった女の子が男の人と来ている姿をまたまた発見。一気にテンションが下がってしまった。実はこの数年前の九州でのライブ・アンダー・ザ・スカイ、前年のオーレックス・ジャズフェスでも遭遇し「自分と趣味が合うじゃん」と思いながらも何か寂しい気持ちで会場を後にした気持ちが、二度あることは三度あるで、またまたよみがえった。このアルバムでの最終期メンバーでのライブは当時の思い出をよみがえらせてくれる。と同時に公式のライブ盤が少ないという不満を持っていたファンにある程度満足感を与えてくれる。ジャコがいなくともアルフォンゾやベイリーでもじゅうぶんにウェザーの魅力を出すことができることも証明された。しかし、まだまだあるはずのライブ音源をそろそろ一気に出してほしい。あの子との四度目があったかはマイルス・デイビスのLive Aroud the worldのレビューで。

ウェザーリポートにとって、ジャコがいた時代が必ずしも最高だったとは言えないかもしれないが、ジャコにとってはウェザーリポート時代が最高だったと思う。このアルバムではリズム(①、⑤)・ソロ(②、③)・作曲(⑦)と傑作がそろっている。
