60年代後半から70年代にかけてブリティッシュ・ロック界ではハード・ロックがひとつのムーヴメントといった以上の台頭をみせた。このユーライア・ヒープもディープ・パープルやブラック・サバスとは性質を異にするも代表的な英ハード・ロック・バンドとして認知されたが、こちらは1971年発表の代表作『対自核』。名曲"Looking At Yourself"、"July Morning"を収録。後者の曲ではマンフレッド・マンによるムーグ・シンセサイザーのソロが聴かれる。

中学の頃、「伊藤政則の70年代ハードロック名曲20選」という記事が「週刊FM」に載っていてさっそくレコードを買って聞きました。1979年の事です。それからずっと愛聴盤です。まったく捨て曲がなく、ズバリ名盤です。

久し振りに聴きたくなりましたが、相変わらずSHM-CD紙ｼﾞｬｹで高いですが、窓がｱﾙﾐ箔かなんかになってたら（じゃないとこの紙ｼﾞｬｹの意味がないですから）買います。’71年のﾋｯﾄ･ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑの本作は特にA面がUHのその後の方向性を決定づけ、そのｱﾚﾝｼﾞはﾌﾟﾛｸﾞﾚ･ﾌｧﾝからも支持された程出来が良く、突き抜けてます。DPに酷似してるうんぬんありますが、ｷﾞﾀｰに頼り過ぎないｲﾝﾊﾟｸﾄある作風はやはりUPのｱﾚﾝｼﾞの妙がありｵﾘｼﾞﾅﾙです。

Look At Yourself (1971.), Uriah Heep’s third studio album Uriah Heep, in the early 1970’s were very much the band which everyone but the fans of the band themselves, loved to hate. They got loads of stick from critics often calling the heavy rock band the ’Poor Man’s Deep Purple’. However, in my opinion, these are particularly unfair criticisms on a band who have produced some excellent music during their career and ’Look at Yourself’, Uriah Heep’s third studio album, released in 1971 stands as one of their finest and most accomplished efforts.
