改めて考えると（考えるまでもないのでしょうが…）トラフィックの中でスティーブ・ウインウッドの役割のすさまじさは、他のグループに例を見ません。エレクトリック・ギター、キーボード、ベース、リードボーカルを全てこなしているわけですから。つまりドラムズ以外は全部彼がやっているわけです。一方のデイブ・メイスンは、アコースティック・ギターだけ（ウインウッドの曲のベースぐらいはやっているでしょうけれど）。しかし、後日のウインウッド・ワンマンという雰囲気はなく、グループとしての緊張感をいちばん感じさせるのが、このファースト作です。「サージェント・ペパーズ」「セル・アウト」「オグデンス・ナット・ゴーン・フレーク」「サタニック・マジェスティーズ」…いかに米国西海岸文化の波しぶきが大きかったか。ところが、英国グループの足腰の強さはここにあって、これらの作品がいずれも普遍性を失っていません。トラフィックのファースト作もまさに時代を超える魅力があります。西海岸の影響を抜いてしまうと、支配しているのは独特の倦怠感。タイトル曲のボーカル、ギターソロはこの時代にしか出せない味を出しています。曲想はまちまちでありますが、どの曲も（メイスン作も含んで）耳に残りますし、深みがあって飽きが来ません。ところで、自由人デイブ・メイスンのことをウインウッドはどう感じていたのだろう、と思います。この作品が成立しているのは、ルーツ音楽に対するウインウッドの耳の良さと共に、メイスンが異分子としてメンバーにいたからです。実に不思議な後味を残す作品でもあります。あと、ジム・キャパルディは…本当に上手いですね。

何だか海賊盤みたいな音ですが、演奏のコンディションは悪くないので星３つ。ウィンウッドやトラフィックのアルバムを全部揃えたいと考える人が最後に買うアルバムだと思います。
