The best-selling female R&B trio of the decade, TLC stands for T-Boz (b. Tionne Watkins, 26 April, 1970), Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes (b. 27 May 1971) and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas (b. 27 February, 1971). Debuted in early '90s from LA Reid & Babyface-founded LaFace Records, they took the scene by surprise with their debut 'Oooooooh … On The TLC Tip', which has sold 5 million copies in US and spawned Top 10 singles 'Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg', 'Baby Baby Baby' and 'What About Your Friends'. Amid the booming of New Jack Swing and house music, they made a sensation with Left Eye's rap, T-Boz's lead vocals and Chilli's harmonies under the guidance of such top producers as Babyface, Dallas Austin and Marley Marl. They received much support and respect from teenage girls by expressing sexuality and independence from men in their own way (they used condoms as fashion accessories). Not only onstage were they sensational, but Left Eye faced the possibility of years in jail after she was arrested for burning down the mansion of Andre Rison, her then football player boyfriend.

The scandal, though, didn't affect the sales of their second album, 'Crazy Sexy Cool', released in late 1994. Just two years from the 'Tip', the trio's vocals and performance became so mature and sensual that they succeeded in breaking out of the image of teenage icon. The album was groovier and more R&B-oriented than its predecessor and featured three number-one singles, 'Creep', 'Red Light Special' and 'Waterfalls'. The latter spent seven straight weeks atop the US chart and became their biggest hit to date. Having sold more than 10 million copies in US alone, 'Crazy Sezy Cool' won TLC two Grammies in 1996, Best R&B album and Best R&B Performance by A Duo or Group for 'Creep'.

After five years of recording hiatus, TLC returned in 1999 with 'Fanmail'. Produced by Dallas Austin, Jam & Lewis, Babyface and Jermaine Dupri, the album became another blockbuster, going six-times platinum, producing two chart-toppers 'No Scrubs' and 'Unpretty', and earning the group another Grammy for Best R&B Album. Shortly after the successful comeback, they began turning to solo projects. While Chilli's maiden solo was on the shelf, Left Eye issued her long-delayed solo debut, 'Supernova' in 2001. In the meantime, T-Boz, who had overcome the sickle-cell anemia, married rapper Mack10 and gave birth to a son.

On April 25, 2002, tragedy struck when Left Eye was killed in a car crash on vacation in Honduras. Without Left Eye, TLC's future looked cloudy, but the surviving two maintained faith in her and decided to carry on. Their fourth album, '3D', which featured Left Eye's voice on several tracks, was issued later that year.

In 2003, TLC is preparing to release its first and possibly final greatest hits package in October. A lot of rumors are surrounding TLC's future, but their joyous and uplifting music, which captured the moods of '90s will never be forgotten.
