ヴォーカル／キーボードのスライ・ストーン（1944年生まれ）を中心に、60年代後半からサンフランシスコを拠点に活動した人種・性別ミックスのファンク・ロック・バンド。1968年の6「Dance To The Music」が全米8位、さらに1968年末には8「Everyday　People」が初の全米No.1ヒットを記録。その後1969年にはウッドストック・フェスティバルに出演、アルバム『スタンド!』をリリースし、300万枚を売り上げた。1971年、1「Family Affair」（全米1位）が収録されたアルバム『暴動』で全米1位を獲得。激動の60年代を過ぎ、夢や希望を失ったダークなサウンドは、70年代を代表する作品といわれている。その後、スライ・ストーンの薬物中毒やバンド内の不和により1975年頃には活動を停止した。
