この作品が発表された頃、ディープ・パープルはこけていましたし、ツェッペリンは休んでいましたし、ブラック・サバスは叩かれていましたし、ユーライア・ヒープは消滅しかかっていました。英国ヘビーロックが総崩れとなった中に出現した新しいシンボルがスコーピオンズとUFOだった印象があります。前述した4バンドに、多かれ少なかれブルーズの影がちらついていたことと比べると、ブルーズの香りは全くなく、過剰なまでにはみ出すギターの爆音とメロメロのメロディーがとても新鮮でした。一方で、この音楽についていっていいんだろうか、と子どもながらに不安な気持ちにもなりました。スコーピオンズの音はブルーズをベースとしたヘビーロックが踏み越えられなかった一線を越えてしまったところがあります。その一線とはやっぱりメロディーに対する執着ではないのかと思います。彼らのメロディーのベースは、欧州ポップスやマカロニ・ウエスタンにあるはずです。マカロニ・ウエスタンが本国のウエスタンには描けないような暴力や残虐さを情け容赦なく表現したことと、どこかスコーピオンズの音は似ていると思います。彼らのメロディに演歌的とも言える愛着を覚えてしまうのは、彼らが民族歌謡を拠り所とするロック・グループであるからではないのでしょうか。 …と冷静に分析してしまいましたが、本当は「ダーク・レディー」を一日中聴き狂ってしまう青春でした。ギターのノイズや発振がこれだけカッコいいんだったら、普通に弾かなくたっていいんじゃないか、と思ったほど。下手なのか、まぐれなのか判らないボーカルとも相まって、とても偉大な曲です。最後にジャケット・デザインの美しさは「ヴァージン・キラー」を凌駕していると思います。

ドイツという国を代表するバンドになった（というかなってしまったというべきか）蠍団。ミレニアム記念にベルリン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団と共演し、少年少女合唱団をステージに上げて…、と聞くとロケンローラー的反抗心が首をもたげるのだけれど、良いのだよね～、これが。”Big City Nights”～”Deadly String Suite” の動静動の流れは見事だし、名曲 ”Still Loving You” も更に聴き応えが増している。
