歌う、というよりミュラーの詩を音付きで朗読しているような語り口に感じる。Ｇ.ジョンソンのピアノ伴奏も急がず、詩の情感を損ねないよう静かに一歩一歩踏みしめるような演奏。けっして劇的ではないがじっくり聴かせる「冬の旅」。　　　失恋、そこから始まる逃避や苦痛など心の中にある冬の荒野の旅を経て、精神的な破綻に至り、ついには空虚の世界に安住の地を求める若者の歩みを語っている朗読劇のような印象だ。　　名盤揃う「冬の旅」、最初の一枚とするにはすこし渋すぎる気がするが、何種類か聴いてこられた方に「こんなアプローチもあった」とお伝えしたい意味でおすすめしたい。　（関係ない話だが、当盤・HMVレビューページに掲載されたマッチョな青色の全身像の写真は合わない気がする･･･）

他の演奏者よりもじっくりとした歩みでシューベルトの晩年（というより死の間際だろうか？）の心境を描きだした名演だと思う。これを聴くと他の盤がセカセカした言葉足らずな演奏に思えてしまう。　ロストロポーヴィチも参加したチェロが堂々と支えてくれることで高音部のヴァイオリンが自由に歌うことができ、ヴァイオリンが歌うとヴィオラの声がしっかり伝わってくる･･･。　　　特に第2楽章のゆったりとした歌い方がおすすめ。他の盤と比べても時間的に長い。しかし曲の中に込められた孤独や絶望、そこから昇華された祈りみたいな想いは他のどの盤よりも深いと思う。
