First issued in 1980, Emotional Rescue was a transatlantic chart-topper and it's infectious title track made the best-sellers list too. Recorded in Nassau in the Bahamas, in Paris and in New York, and produced by Jagger and Richards under their Glimmer Twins guise, it also contains the classic rocker She's So Cold, which went Top 40 in both the UK and the US, and Dance (Pt 1), another groove-oriented track, which was a club hit in the States. The bittersweet ballad All About You features one of Richards' most affecting vocal performances as well as Bobby Keys' distinctive saxophone. Corriston used a thermo camera to create the album's unusual cover, and drew on the same technique for the Emotional Rescue video.

ファンからはあまり評価されていない気の毒なアルバム。確かに、最高傑作ではないかもしれない。しかし、ミック・ジャガーは”Dance(PT1)”やタイトル曲などでいろいろな歌い方を披露しているし、”Indian Girl”や”All About You”(K.リチャーズ作）のようなバラードや”Down In The Hole”のようなブルース、はたまた”Where The Boys Go”や”She’s So Cold”のようなスピード感あるロックも収録され、聴いている側は楽しくてたまらない。音楽は文字通り楽しくてなんぼ、ですよ。アルバムとしては、散漫かもしれない。でも、ファンはストーンズのアルバムが全てコンセプト・アルバムであってほしいと思っているわけではありません。これでいいんです。おっと、言い忘れてました。ボビー・キーズのサックスプレイもいい感じですよ。

ストーンズ流ディスコ「Dance, Pt. 1」で始まる８０’Sの幕開け。レゲビートの「Send It to Me」、パンクムーブメントへの解答にも取れるような「Let Me Go」や「Where the Boys Go」、南部臭漂う「Indian Girl」、ブルージーな「Down in the Hole」。そしてな、なんとなニューウェーブへの接近を図った「Emotional Rescue」。これには当時かなりの驚きを覚えたものです。アルバム中、最も人気の高いと思われるのは「She’s So Cold」。ラストはキース必殺のバラード「All About You」で閉め。当時はかなりキワ物感もあったのですが、今聴くとなかなかどうして、これほどバラエティに富んだアルバムながら、どこを取ってもストーンズ。スルメ的な味わいさえ感じさせる一枚だと思います。
