この作品の発表によって、ロッドは新しいファンをたくさん、たくさん獲得したのですが、古くからのファンの中には「スマイラー」までがロッドだ、という人もいらっしゃるのです。今になって聞き返すと、きらきらゴージャズなだけではない音の深みみたいなものが見えてきます。ひとつは旧A面である5. Stone Cold Soberまでの朴訥なリズムです。尻を蹴飛ばされて走り出すような、…そうフェイセズのノリが再現されている気がするのです。ドラムズもベースも複数のスタジオ系ミュージシャンですから、ロッドの好みだったと言うところかと。北東部でも西海岸でもないマッスル・ショールズを制作の拠点としたのは、ロッドがR＆B好きということからでしょうか。その辺りは、スコティッシュ・アイリッシュ系移民の土地でもあって、彼にとって第二の故郷みたいなものだったはずです。ロッドの専売特許である、スコティッシュ・アイリッシュの香りは旧B面である6. I Don’t Want To Talk About It 以降に現れています。このアルバムのギタリストはとても豪華で、スティーブ・クロッパー、ジェシ・エド・デイヴィス、デビッド・リンドレー、フレッド・タケット…。上手いだけではない人たちです。生粋のモッズであったロッドが、あこがれの聖地に渡った、という意味合いの素晴らしい作品です。

イントロなしでいきなり始まってしまう世界は、全くフェイセズ。前作「エブリー・ピクチャー・テルズ・ア・ストーリー」が確立したロッドのカリスマ性を、ダメ押しするような名作です。ただ、ロッドの専売特許であるスコティッシュ・アイリッシュ風味のバラッドはここでも健在です。ロン・ウッドが毛羽立ったファズ・ギターを弾くのに対して、アコースティックはマーティン・クイッテントンが分担しております。やっぱり作品中最大の盛り上がりは「エンジェル」になってしまいます。ジミ・ヘンドリックスの演奏するこの曲にどこか緊張感があるのに比して、ロッドの解釈はあくまでラブソングです。からっとして愛を歌いかけることにかけてロッドは天才的。同時に深みを感じさせるところも芸だなあ、と思います。ロニー・レーンのベースが聴けるのは、この作品が最後になります。
