    オーケストラ・ビルダーとして名高いワールトによる録音である。これまでプレヴィンとアシュケナージの２番を愛聴してきたが、これらをはるかに上回る超名演である。そのあまりの美しさに酔いしれてしまった。情感豊かな弦楽器群は奥行きのある広がりをたっぷりと表現しているが決して溺れることなく、抑制された美を表現している。曲想も決してこってりしたロシア色ではなく、後期ロマン派の馥郁たる香りを味わえる。メランコリーではあるが、惑溺などしていないのだ。エレガントなロマンの香りである。強烈な香水の香りではなく、過ぎ去った思い出のほのかな香りである。２番をはじめとして他の曲も十分に時間をかけたリハーサルを繰り返し、完成度が極めて高く、出来不出来の差が全く感じられない。オランダのオーケストラは知名度が低くてもレベルはかなり高い。ワールトの手腕によるものであることは疑いの余地がない。またＳＡＣＤであるために音場がかなり広く、弦楽器のトレモロなども精細で明晰な響きである。ＥＸＴＯＮの中でも超優秀録音であって、大容量のスピーカーで聞けば、効果抜群である。

    ５７年とは思えないような録音の明晰さには驚きである。リマスターがこれほど音質を向上させているのはあまり例がない。さて演奏であるが。なんといてもラヴェルが素晴らしく特に２楽章はその美しさ、そしてサラバンド風のリズムのテンポ感は他の名録音を凌駕している。指揮者は決して著名ではないものの、ミケランジェリとテンポ解釈が見事に一致しており、一体感が見事である。 　また私にとっては今一つ全体像のつかみにくかったラフマニノフの４番がこの録音で明快にその構成を把握することができた。２，３番に比較して４番は録音が少ないがその中にあって、美しさを表出している点において私にとって最高の名盤となりえた。録音の古さを全く感じさせない、ミケランジェリのあまりにも高潔なテスタメントである。
