初めて聴いたのは発表されてから数年後。炎やウォールを先に聴いていましたので、Dogsでのギルモアが弾くギターにしびれました。 Sheepのイントロのエレピもいいです。フロイドの作品の中でも演奏においてはキレがよいというかエッジの効いたものだと思います。

このアルバムが抵抗なく聴けるようになったら、どんな70年代アンダーグラウンド音楽だっていけてしまうんではないでしょうか。シド・バレットという絶対的リーダーではないにしても、グループのコンセプトを作る人物が使い物にならなくなっていったのに、よく完成させたものです。今から考えれば…。恐るべき緊迫感が最後まで続く作品。「夜明けの口笛吹き」が陽気な狂気だったとするなら、喧騒が過ぎたあとの空虚をじっと見つめているような緊迫感です。わたしは中学生のとき、このアルバムを耳にして、こわくてこわくて仕方がありませんでした。「太陽賛歌」のどろんどろんとした太鼓もこわかったですが、5. A Saucerful Of Secrets で、ニック・メイスンの太鼓が彼方からやってくるところでは本当に逃げたくなりました。6. See-Saw は、「原子心母」のIfにつながるようなリック・ライト作のアコースティック曲ですが、魂を持って行かれそうになります。寂しさの極みです。この寂しさは、ロバート・ワイアットのソロ作にも似ています。ただ、この段階でウォーターズがリーダーシップをとっていたのか、と言えば違うと思います。ウォーターズの提出するテーマを、他のメンバーやノーマン・スミスがアイデアを交換しながら作り上げていったのではないでしょうか。フロイドは、演奏技量が高かったわけではなく、音そのものの生々しさを拾い上げて編集するセンスが一級品でした。この頃のハーベスト・レーベルに、高性能のエンジニア集団がいたことと無関係ではありません。最後に、「神秘」というタイトルですが、フロイドは神秘主義者ではありません。
