前作『ザ・レジスタンス』から約3年、無敵のミューズが放つ、通算6枚目となるニュー・アルバム。
先日公開されたアルバム予告映像で使用されていた新曲では、「Butterflies & Hurricanes」を思わせる華麗なクラシック調から、ダブステップへと展開していくミューズの新たな新境地が垣間見られ、ハリウッドの超大作かと見間違うような映像では、ウォール街が！？石油が！？地球が！？大変なことに！？的な様々な世界のニュース映像を組み合わせ、映像の中に登場する、女性アナウンサーは「熱力学第二法則」から抜粋されていると思われるニュース原稿を読み上げている。「熱力学第二法則」は、エネルギーの質と移動の方向に関する研究から生まれた法則である。

第1弾シングル「SURVIVAL」ロンドン五輪公式ソングに大決定！！
「SURVIVAL」はオリンピック期間中、2012年ロンドンオリンピックの全ての会場で、選手入場時や表彰式の前、競技が行われている間などに流れることになっている。

1stと6th聴き比べてここまで違う印象を与える洋楽バンドも珍しいんじゃないでしょうか　　　　　　(邦楽バンドにはよくも悪くも案外いますが)　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　印象としては「これまでやって来たこと全部やってみました」+αという感じ。ヘビーな重低音のMUSEだけを聴きたいというひとには合わないかも。シンフォニックなヘビーロックに始まって、　　ディスコ、ファンク、トランス、ダブステップと、以前にも増してかなり幅は広いです。これまでやって来たことの精度を高めて、さらに新たなタイプのスタイルにも挑戦しています。加えてクリス作・ボーカルの曲が2曲入ってるのも新機軸で、特にSave Meはマシューのアルペジオを中心とした浮遊感漂うサウンドで新たな可能性を感じます。マシューのカッティングとシンセの絡みが肝のメジャー感漂うBig FreezeもこれまでのMUSEにはなかったタイプの曲。 12,13は組曲風の女性ナレーションのメッセージ性の高いインスト(12に一部マシューのシャウトはありますが)。マシューのギターがヒステリックでたまりません。確かに賛否両論ありそうな本作。”これまでのMUSE”という先入観は一度捨てて聞いていただきたいです。
