現代イタリアを代表する画家モラヴィアの「孤独な青年」を基に、過去の罪にさいなまれながらファシズムに傾倒していく男の孤独と頽発を官能的に描いた一遍。「地獄の黙示録」（’79）でアカデミー撮影賞に輝いた名カメラマン、ヴィットリオ・ストラーロによる奇跡の映像美と19歳でヨーロッパのデカダンスを身にまとったドミニク・サンダの美貌に心をうばわれない者はいないであろう。

1930年代後半のローマ。機能不全に陥った中流家庭で育ち、少年期に異常な出来事を体験した青年マルチェロは、「正常」な人生を送ること、すなわちファシズムへの同化を希求するようになっていた。彼は秘密警察の一員として、現在パリで亡命生活を送っているクアドリ教授の動向を探る役割を自ら、買って出る。クアドリはマルチェロの大学時代の恩師で、反ファシズム運動の精神的支柱の一人でもあった。マルチェロは結婚したばかりの娘ジュリアを伴い、パリへと赴くが……。

『ラスト・エンペラー』で一般的な知名度の上がった監督であり、『ラスト・タンゴ・イン・パリ』でセンセーションを起こしてしまった監督だが、これは彼のキャリアの比較的初期の作品。モラビアの『イル・コンフォルミスタ』が原作。全編でスタイリッシュな映像を堪能できるが、これは撮影監督のストラーロに負うところ大であろう。前述の二作品を気に入らなかった人でも、これは気に入る可能性は十分にあると思います。
