Product Description

Sean Penn earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in this movie about an educationally subnormal adult engaged in a legal battle over the right to raise his daughter. He plays Sam Dawson, who has the mental age of seven and works in an L.A. branch of a coffee chain. His daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) has started to behave badly in school and on investigation the authorities decide that the childlike Sam may not be capable any more of raising her. Sam somehow manages to enlist the legal help of careerwoman and lawyer Rita Harrison (Michelle Pfeiffer). A tough career woman and lawyer she may be, but she decides to take on Sam's case pro bono.

障害者という難しい役どころをうまく演じたショーン・ペン。ダコタファニングの天才子役っぷりに驚かされましたが、本当に良い作品でした。父子の愛にあふれた作品です。

貧しい障がい者で、愛娘まで奪われようとしているサムと、美貌の敏腕弁護士リタ。この「弱者」と「強者」の関係が途中、がらりと入れ替わってしまうところが、古典落語「らくだ」のようで、面白い。ミシェル・ファイファーの美しさと名演技に、しびれた。

デ・ニーロに次ぐカメレオン俳優としての評価を固めつつあるショーン・ペンの演技力には脱帽。障害者と子どもを題材に取り入れた時点で泣かせる映画としては、大きな武器を持っているのだが、その部分に頼らない社会性を組み入れることで作品の質を高めている。実力派アーティストによるビートルズのカバーも良い。
