ファーストカットからいきなり卑猥。全編こんなエッチなおふざけばかり。実に馬鹿げた話であり、馬鹿げた話だと思ったからこんなふざけた脚本にしたのだろう。このギャグが、見事なほど全然笑えない。それどころかマシンガンを撃ち合う基地の攻防戦など実際の戦場に従軍したような写実的なカメラ。馬鹿げたシチュエーションが、リアルな命のやりとりの中で繰り広げられる不条理。映画は最後の最後までふざけ倒し、物語は安全な作戦室のお偉いさんたちのエッチの算段で終わる。どこまでも人を馬鹿にした話で、勘違いしてはいけないが、馬鹿にされているのは当然見ている我々である。これほど怒りを覚えるブラックコメディーもない。キューブリックは１００パーセント確信犯だ。

学生のころ、名画座で初めてこれを見たときの興奮を今でも思い出す。当時はまだ米ソ冷戦時代。Ｂ－５２が核爆弾を積んで巡回飛行をしているという状況にもリアルな怖さがあった。そんな核兵器緊張状態を、１人３役のセラーズが戯画化し笑いにしてしまう。にもかかわらず、核兵器のリアルな怖さが終始漂っているので、笑えない。そこが本作のすごさ。冷戦と核兵器に対する、ブラック・ユーモアを通り越した不謹慎なほどの皮肉。ラストの核爆弾ロデオと美しい音楽に乗せたキノコ雲のオンパレードは、あまりにも鮮烈。どんなにシリアスな反核映画でも達
