無言歌集は、ＣＤ１枚の選集でもよいが、２枚で全48曲が収録できるので、せっかくなら全曲持っておくことをお薦めする。特に、このような廉価でちゃんとした演奏、ちゃんとした録音が入手できるのならばなおさらだ。バレンボイムは奇を衒わない演奏で楽々と全曲を録音し、（ＬＰ期だから３枚組になっただろう、その）余白に魅力的な数曲を付け加えるサービスまでしてくれた。聴き慣れた軽いピアノの音である。ベートーヴェンだともの足りないが、メンデルスゾーンならちょうどよい。

７０年代の交響曲チクルスを集大成したシンフォニーエディションは販売終了になっていますが、個々のチクルスは未だ現役。その中ではこのメンデルスゾーンが最も価値が高いんじゃないかと思います。カラヤンのメンデルスゾーンは再録音もなく、レパートリィとして重要視はしていなかったのかもしれませんが、相性抜群な上に死角がありません。曲想の描き分けもさることながら、豪快さと優美さを両立させるカラヤンのスタイルが目覚しく、「無敵」と言うのが偽らざる感想でした。
