安心して、格調高きメルヘンの世界へ身を浸せる録音。終曲の包容感のある余韻も、堪らなく素晴らしい。こんな値段で、手に入れられることも嬉しい。

風格のある実に素晴らしい超名演だ。フィンガルの洞窟は、ＬＰ時代はスコットランドにカプリングされ、その後、ＣＤ化された際には、スコットランドがイタリアとカプリングされたことから、長らく日の目を見ることがなかった幻の名演であったが、やはり本盤を聴くと、その雄渾なスケール感に圧倒される。ゆったりとしたインテンポによる演奏で、特に、何かをしているわけではないが、その深沈たる内容の濃さは、他のいかなる名演を凌駕する至高のレベルに達していると言える。真夏の夜の夢には、同じく名演としてプレヴィン盤があるが、プレヴィン盤は、聴かせどころのツボを心得た演出の巧さが光った名演であった。ところが、クレンペラーには、そのような聴き手へのサービス精神など薬にしたくもない。堂々たるインテンポで、自らの解釈を披露するのみであるが、その演奏の味の濃さと言ったら、筆舌には尽くしがたいものがあると言える。テンポも実にゆったりとしたものであるが、それだけに、メンデルスゾーンがスコアに記した音符のすべてが音化され、音楽に内在する魅力が前面に打ち出されてくるのが素晴らしい。木管楽器の活かし方など、出色のものがあり、クレンペラーの数ある名演の中でも、トップの座を争う出来と言えるのではないか。ＨＱＣＤ化による音質向上効果も目覚ましいものがある。
