    　日本でもさほど上演機会に、恵まれない作品であるが、瞑想曲だけは数多く演奏されている。宗教的、哲学的なテーマであるドラマであるために音楽は劇的な変化に乏しいが弦楽器の響きが薄くそれによって崇高で、マスネらしい美しい旋律が、多く聞かれる。演出は大きな動きに乏しいが、それによってむしろ対話が、重要なテーマであることが知れる。むしろ場面転換で使われているバレエが官能的な効果を生み出している。歌手では、エヴァ・メイが大変に素晴らしい歌唱を聴かせ、胸をあらわにしてまで舞姫を演じ切っているのは特筆すべきである。とはいってもサロメとは全く異なる美しさである。最後の死の場面などは神との一体化を象徴するかのような崇高さと知性をを感じさせる。中島康晴は柔らかい声を聞かせているが存在感がいま一つ薄い。全体の仕上がりは良好で、特にフィナーレは宗教的幻想に包まれる。日本の幽玄に近いとも思える。おすすめの１枚である。瞑想曲を何度聞いても飽きない人は、是非ともオペラも楽しんでほしいものだ。

    マスネの名作『ウェルテル』。このアルバムはなかなかに結構な出来栄えでした。主役のボチェッリが企画の売り物でもありましょう。個人的にはこれまでどうもボチェッリさんの声に違和感を感じて、クラシック向きではない、ましてオペラ向きではない、と思っていたのですが、このアルバムを聴いて彼が注目され人気がある理由がわかったように思いました。ここでの印象は、「ちょっと陰ったパヴァロッティ」という感じの声だなあ、ということです。テクニックとしてのビブラートと不安定さの「揺れ」とが混じっちゃってるのはいかんけど、声の素材そのものはいいんだなあ。納得しました。そしてとくにヒロイックな役柄でもないので、ここでの歌はとても合っているように思いました。ヒロインのカロリスさん、指揮のアベルさんともども、全体に結構かと思います。第１幕が実に優美ですばらしいなあ。録音も文句なしに優秀。堪能したアルバム、よろしゅうございます。
