私はクラシック畑ではないので、という前置きをしておきます。本作はイギリスのジャズ・ロックバンド「コロシアムⅡ」のベーシスト、ニール・マーレイを除くメンバーに元ゾンビーズのロッド・アージェントらが参加したA.L.Webberの一つの試みです。参加しているメンバーはその分野では非常に有名であるので興味深く思い入手しました。しかしどうしても「コロシアムⅡ」での見事な演奏を先に知っているので、飼い殺しのような彼らの使われ方に納得がいかないのです。単なるBGMとして聞き流せる方にはおすすめしますが、背景を知っている私としては、特にジャズ・ロック、プログレ、ハード・ロックファンにとっては諸手を上げて「おすすめ」とは言い難い一枚です。実に複雑な心境です。緊張感のない演奏は彼らじゃなくてもできたはずなので。。。この評価となります。本当は☆1個もあげたくないのですが、黒歴史を知る資料としての評価となります。

私は本当にこの曲が大好きです。この曲が発表された当時、私は大学生でした。はじめて聴いたときにものすごく感動して、毎日のように聴いていました。いまでもこの曲を偏愛しており、iPodの中から消えたことはありません。同曲異演盤を持たないため、他に比較する演奏がないのですが、マゼールの指揮も非常に素晴らしいと思います。マゼールの力なくしてここまでの魅力的な音盤にはなり得なかったのではないかと思っています。初発時は東芝EMIから発売されましたが、後にDECCAから再発されました。製盤技術の進歩でしょうか、DECCA盤のほうが音質はよいと感じます。また2曲目の「Dies irae and Rex tremendae」の冒頭のフォルティシモや、「Lux aeterna and Libera me」の最後のフォルティシモを歪みなく再生できるか、「Hosanna」が伸びやかに響くかなど、オーディオ的にも聴き所が満載だと思います。
