リトル・フィートをこれから聴こうとするユーザーで最初にこの作品から、という人は稀だと思います。…が、本来はこの作品から聴いた方が彼らの全体像を理解できるのでしょう。マザーズから飛び出して人間臭い音楽をやろうとしたローウェル・ジョージと、それに賛同するメンバーの勇気あるファースト・ステップと少々の気負いを感じることができます。おそらくこの段階ではローウェル・ジョージの中で、フィートのスタイルをこうするんだ、という確信はありません。フィートがフィートらしい音楽るつぼと化していくのは、ビル・ペイン、ポール・バレールのジャンル横断的な素養と、リッチー・ヘイワードの勘の良さにも大きな要因があると思っています。しかしローウェルがいなかったら成り立たなかった、ということは事実です。彼のエキセントリックさはすでにこの作品から顕著。ギターなどは、この後の作品よりヘビーなぐらいです。聴きこむと他の作品にない味わいが徐々に感じられてきます。これからフィートの音楽を聴こうとするユーザーのかたに。けして大人買いしないでください。自分の経験では、どの作品でも腑に落ちてくるのに1か月はかかっています。「ディキシー・チキン」は腑に落ちるのに数年かかりました。咀嚼するのに時間のかかるタイプの音楽なのです。時間をかけて一枚一枚聴きこんでいくことをおすすめします。

「Kickin It at the Barn」発表後のツアーからで、同アルバムからは2曲を演奏しています。この頃、彼らはHOT TOMATOレーベルを立ち上げたばかりであり、この作品はライブの記録を新たに収益構造にしていこうとする意図で企画されたもの。会場でDVDになる、とはっきり言っています。DVDバージョンを見ると、会場はそれほど大きくもなく、とてもいい雰囲気です。後ろにドリンク・バーなんかもあり、お客さんはビール瓶片手にスタンディングで楽しんでいます。実にうらやましい風景です。フィートのお客さんですから年齢層は、それ相応。会場の様子が時折映し出され、それだけでも飽きません。音盤では、改めて彼らの演奏力はケタ違いだと思えます。作り出すグルーブがただものではありません。メンバーそれぞれの見せ場もきちんとあります。サム・クレイトンは彼がボーカルをとる「スパニッシュ・ムーン」。リッチー・ヘイワードは「ファットマン・イン・ザ・バスタブ」のドラムソロ。ショーン・マーフィーは「アイド・ビー・ライイン」といった具合です。フレッド・タケットは8弦ギターやトランペットを駆使して楽しませてくれます。「バスタブ」から「レット・イット・ロール」「ウィリン」「プリーズ・ドント・フィート・ミー・ナウ」と連続する流れは、アメリカン・バンド最強といった風情です。彼らのユーザーであって、本当によかったと思いました。
