録音当時、ベイエリアに引っ込み積極的に自身の演奏をしていなかったジョーヘンのソロ・プレイヤーとしての凄さをみせつけ、B.マルサリス以降のサックス奏者に決定的な影響を与えた作品。録音が遠く薄く、マスタリングレベルが異常に低いので一聴しょぼいのですが、音をググッとあげて聴いてください。基本ダークな音で色数は少ないですが、階調を自由に操り、一点から丁寧に糸を吐き三次元で構築していくようにソロをとり、ブロウすることなくクールな空間を作り出します。素っ気ないベース、静かに静かにたたくドラムスもクール。動的な曲が多い2枚目がよりジャズぽいのですが、静かさに耐え切れないかのような咳払いの中、ジョーヘンがあらわれる ”Beatrice” （この曲がスタンダードになったのはこれ以降だと思う）から始まる一枚目の方が取り憑いてきます。なお、初出は2枚のLPで ”Stella~” と ”All the~” はCDのボーナスだったと思います。

ﾓｰｶﾞﾝ、ﾌﾗｰ、ﾊｯﾁｬｰｿﾝを加えたｾﾌﾟﾃｯﾄ演奏。黒く、洗練されたﾓｰﾄﾞで迫る①～③が最高。ﾍﾞｽﾄは③、ｼﾞｮｰ･ﾍﾝのｸﾞﾘｸﾞﾘ、旋回ﾌﾚｰｽﾞが炸裂。（3ヶ月前の録音、H.ｼﾙﾊﾞｰ「Cape Verdean Blues」Nutvilleと雰囲気、ﾌﾚｰｽﾞが良く似ている。そこでの経験が活き、ﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞのまとまり感もあり） ④～のｶﾘﾌﾞ調を評価する向きもあるが、少し散漫な印象。
