70年代に多くのリーダー作を残し、そのいずれもがレア･グルーヴ好事家の間で高い評価を得ているが、中でも名盤「CHORUS」と並ぶ傑作として語り継がれているのが、この「SOUL IMPRESSIONS」(1975年オリジナル)である。
メロウなオルガンのフレーズを軸に、重厚なホーン･セクションと、ラテン･フレーバーを助長するハンド･パーカッション、そして時代を思わせるサイケなワウ･ギターがアクセント。ダイナミックで熱気に溢れた至高のタイトル・トラック#4をはじめ、疾走感と緊迫した情景が想起されるような独特のアレンジで、70年代サウンド・トラック風情を醸し出すコンテンツはすべて素晴らしい。ジャズ・ファンク・グルーヴ〜サバービアなムーディ･チューンと縦横無尽に展開する構成もスリリング。プログレッシヴでありながらラウンジーな煌きの、まさにヤンコ･ワールド全開の絶品インスト・トラック群。後年、続編がリリースされるなど、この1枚がヤンコのキャリアにおける中核的な作品となったことは、間違いない。
