クリーム、ジミ・ヘンドリックス、BBA、グランド・ファンク…と、トリオ編成の伝説的バンドが数々あります。ジェイムズ・ギャングは、ジョー・ウォルシュのワンマン・バンドではなく、そうしたヘビーロック・トリオと肩を並べる存在であることがよく分かります。冒頭の「Stop」の爆音ギターゆえ、音が悪いと一般的に思われています。…が、実はそうでもありません。何よりドラムズ、ベースの音がしっかり聞き取れて、それもウォルシュのギターと拮抗した迫力で鳴っているライブです。ジェイムズ・ギャングは単なる原初的なヘビーロック・バンドではありませんでした。オルガンやアコースティック・ギターの使い方、アレンジ、作曲など、とても影響力あるチャレンジを繰り返すグループでした。このライブにおいてもそうで、ウォルシュがオルガン演奏をする曲は別な魅力を放っています。4. Tend My Garden は、「RidesAgain」収録曲で、後年のボストンやジャーニーのつくる音楽の原型と言ってもいい曲です。6. Walk Away は、彼らの代表曲で、Stop以上のインパクトを与えてくれます。ファズ・ベースのすごいのなんの。最後の7. Lost Woman だけは17分の長いジャム曲です。途中で様々な実験があり、ケチャのようにメンバーの声だけでリズムを作っている部分さえあります。彼らが挑戦的なバンドだったことが、この曲によっても明らかです。

様々なアイデアの詰まった作品であるともに、他のグループに大きな影響を与えています。まず、ルーズで荒々しい1. Funk #49。ウォルシュのギターの魅力にとりこになります。続く2. Asshtonpark では、ディレイのかかったギターとベースのからみが不思議な世界をつくります。この当時、デジタル・ディレイなんか商品化していないはずですから、ウォルシュが自作したということでしょう。ドラムズはジム・キャパルディのような味わいです。4. The Bomberの展開がまた素晴らしくて、ファズ・ギターの音色といい、途中にラベルのボレロを持ってくる構成といい、独自性の極致。この前半部の構成を、ピート・タウンジェンドは「フーズ・ネクスト」のヒントにした、と聞きます。 5. Tend My Garden からが旧B面で、アコースティック・ギターをぐっと前に出した流れになります。ボストン、スティクスのオリジンがここにあります。カントリーの色が濃い曲の数々は、スティブン・スティルスを好きだったウォルシュの別の側面です。レッド・ツェッペリンのサードと制作時期が近く、ジミー・ペイジとウォルシュも仲が良かったはずなので、そのへんの関係も気になるところです。ラスト9. Ashes The Rain And I は弦楽を導入した大作です。タイトなスケジュールで、これらの制作をスタジオ・ライブのような形でつくっていった、とライナーに書いてあります。
