ジェネシスがジェネシスであったのは｢静寂の嵐｣までであり、本作はそのスタートラインに立った記念すべきアルバムだ。オープニングのミュージカルボックスからサルマシスの泉まで、とても四十年前の音楽とは思えず、いつまでも新鮮だ。フォックストロットやブロードウェイの陰に隠れがちだが、本作こそ彼らの最高峰であり、ロッククラシックだと思う。おりしもハケットが六月に来日し、奇跡のライブを聴けそうだ。五十過ぎのオヤジがハンカチをもってクラヴチッタに行こうと思う。

TバンクスとPコリンズがポップでキャッチーなメロディメイカーとしてのセンスを躊躇なく提示できた初めてのアルバムかもしれない。オープニングの「Behind The Lines」はポップ・フィールドへ歩みを進めることを高らかに宣言したファンファーレの様に響く。本作からKORGの全面的なバックアップを受けまたCトンプソンというフレキシブルなドラマーを得て、ツアー/ステージにおけるバンドサウンドの再現という呪縛から解放されたことは転機になっている。彼らとの関係が今日まで続くことを考えると、バンドにとって大きな意味を持っていたことが理解できる。フロントマンとして自由に動ける様になったPコリンズ。オーケストレーションを楽にコントロールできる様になったTバンクス。二人のバンドにおけるスタンスと役割の変化が如実に反映したのが本作であり、以降の成功につながるマイルストーンと言うべき傑作にした理由でもある。
