こんなにも表情が豊かだっただろうか。以前の星野さんは日常感溢れるバラード曲が多かったが、今作では非常に曲の幅を感じる。この感情は元々シングル「夢の外へ」を聴いたときにも感じたものだが、このアルバムを聴いて改めてそれを感じた。明るい部分、暗い部分。誰かへのメッセージに、物思いにふけるだけの言葉。時にはポップに、時にはソウルにそれらを乗せる。でもそこに無理は感じない。あくまで星野源として何を届けたいかを自身に問うて作られた感があり、どれを取っても間違えなく星野源なのである。タイトルの「Stranger」は直訳すれば見知らぬ人。アルバムの内容から意味を考えれば、星野源の中の見知らぬ人＝自分自身も気づかなかった奥に秘めた感情と捉えられる。まだ見たことのない星野源の世界。あなたはここで新たな星野源を知ることになる。

現在(2013年1月)著者の星野源さんが療養中という中でこの本を読むことになったのは、これを通して星野さんをより深く知る上ではかなり影響があると思います。表題エッセイに短く綴られた言葉だけでも、彼が自身の仕事とどういう風に向き合っているか、そして働くということそのものに対しての思いがどういうものかが伝わってきます。もちろん、もともと雑誌の映画レビュー的連載をまとめた単行本という目的があったのもあり、仕事以外でも何に触れてきたのか、好きなもの、これは欠かせない！というもの、すべてが彼の人生であり生活、働く星野源なのです。昨年(2012年)12月にくも膜下出血で入院するまで、メディアでは「忙しいです」と常々言っていました。そんな声と風景が、文字を追うごとに思い出されるようでした。辛さとぶつかり続けながらも楽しそうに振る舞う星野さん。いや、楽しいのです。そうでなければ、自分のことがまとめてあって、それに「働く男」だなんて表に書けないはずです。
