    うーん。評価が難しい。エルガーらしいか、と言われれば私は絶対に否と答える。しかし･･･。これはこれで実に感動的。2番など、なかなか泣かせる。英国以外の指揮者がほとんど振ってこなかったエルガーの交響曲（特別志願英国人的なプレヴィンと英国人？なショルティという特殊例があるが）。それをあえてシノーポリが取り上げたからには、彼なりの気概があるはずだ。勿論、英国のフィルハーモニア管を振っているからという背景もあるのだろうが、しかしこの曲を録音すると言って喜ばなそうなDGに、しっかりと録音を残している。演奏は、彼がやりたかったことが良く伝わってくる演奏。英国指揮者がこのテンポで演奏することはまずなかった。普遍的ではないが、とても味わい深い。シノーポリのマーラーを聴いている人は、だいたいイメージできるはず。
