Created in celebration of Pierre Boulez's 90th birthday, this 10-CD box set documents the decade of concerts under his direction which revolutionized and dominated Parisian musical life from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. Composers include Boulez himself, Second Viennese School plus the dominant modernists of the 20th and 21st centuries including Stravinsky, Messiaen, Berio, Stockhausen, Henze and Nono. A bonus includes an interview with Pierre Boulez.

ブーレーズの訃報を受けて聴かずにいられなくなったのが、このセットに収録された「ル・マルトー・サン・メートル」の最初の録音。実に60年前に前衛中の前衛として紹介された貴重な記録だ。その無骨なモノーラルのサウンドに慄然としながら、次は1964年ストラスブールでのステレオ録音を聴く。先程は狭い閉鎖空間で出口を探して暴れていた音が、突然自由に跳ね回り始め、そこかしこにエネルギーをぶちまけていく。こうなると、残る3回の録音も続けて聴いてしまうわけだが、最初の録音から最後の録音まで50年近い時間を2時間半で体験するような感覚を覚える。初期録音で音楽を支配していたストレスと呼んでいいほどのテンションが、時代とともに、あるいは作曲者の年齢とともに薄れていき、当たり前の音楽になっていくのが何とも不思議だ。このセットには、「ル・マルトー・サン・メートル」の初めの2つの録音が完全に収録されているばかりか、「ピエロ・リュネール」「兵士の物語」といった伝説的な演奏、そしてメシアンやシュトックハウゼン、ベリオらの実験の記録が詰め込まれている。半世紀前の現代音楽の領域を解雇するのに避けては通れない。それにしても、この時代の旗手がついに鬼籍に入り、尖った音楽との出会いがまた減ってしまうと思うと、たまらなく寂しい。
