ショパンのワルツ集は、ルビンシュタインのサロン的雰囲気たっぷりの演奏を決定盤として推す。ではもう１枚、「聴き慣れた曲集だけど、何か新機軸はないの？思いつきでリズムを崩したりテンポを変えたりするのはＮＧだけど」とお探しの方には、このカツァリス盤である。フランスのピアノ演奏の伝統である、譜面をポリフォニックに読むスタイルを重視するカツァリスは、ショパンの書いた譜面から、普通は和声に埋もれて聴き取れない「テノール」（とカツァリスは呼ぶ）旋律を浮き立たせる。非常に新鮮な驚きを味わえる。録音がややデッドでピアノの音が生々しいのが好みの分かれるところだが、この音が演奏者の好みなのだろう（同レーベルから出てる彼の盤は皆この音だから）。

i_love_opera氏の説明どおり、この２ＣＤセットは超お買い得である。”Waltzes, Impromptus： Rubinstein”のタイトルで出ている１枚と、”Ballades, Scherzos： Rubinstein ”のタイトルで出ているＳＡＣＤの１枚がセットになってこの価格なのだから。ショパンのワルツを（遺作を除いて）全曲揃えたい方には、決定盤としてお薦めできる。もちろん、今や”Rubinstein Plays Chopin - RCA Recordings(10CD)”が2000円代で出ているので、そちらで揃えるほうが、さらに賢明であろう。
