1961年ステレオ録音。今や大半の欧米人にとっても非日常のものと化してしまった《祈り》あるいは《教義》に対する想念を、二度にわたる《改宗》という紆余曲折を経ながらもなお真摯に持続させ得た、いかにもこの巨匠らしい厳しい精神の発露とでも言いたくなる名演奏。
　各フレーズへの厳格な対応（形の維持）、フーガの見事なさばきかた、及び拍節感の強い抽出に圧倒されながらも、不思議な充足感と感動に満たされるのは、そうした背景あっての事と考えると理解も容易。もちろん、全体構成のシンメトリー重視のほか、様式美の追求ぶりも見事なもの。（ＨＭＶ）

年季の入ったファンなら知らない者のないような名盤だが、最近、廉価盤やSACDといった様々な盤で入手可能になったのを喜びたい。辛口のドイツレクイエムというべきもので、演奏の感じはレヴューアーの皆さんの評論の通りで、あまり付け加えることはないのだが、久しぶりに聴いてみて、ソリスト2人の技術的高さと言語表現のレベルの高さに舌を巻き、巨匠クレンペラーの渋く重厚な響きと速めのテンポで感傷を排した無愛想ながら、そこはかとなく湧き上がってくる温かみには感銘させられる。屈折した意地悪男クレンペラーの鬼瓦のような顔のメガネの奥でギロリと輝く目が、神聖な音楽に感極まり、うっすらと涙で光る姿を想像してしまう。実際はそんなヤワな人ではなかったのだろうが…。クレンペラーのドイツレクイエムは、ほかに50年代のウィーンフィルとのライヴ盤などもあり、そちらはオケの響きも手伝って、より若々しいというか元気な感じに仕上がっている。

　多くの指揮者がこの素晴らしい名曲を1つの音の“塊り”として私たちにぶつけてくるのに対して，クレンペラーは違う。一音一音を大切に丁寧に奏させ，それらを積み重ねて私たちに届けてくれる。積分した結果を届けてくれる多くの指揮者が多いのに対して，あたかも作品をまず微分して見せてくれて，それを改めて積分（組み立て）して見せてくれているかのよう。今まで耳に届いてこなかった音が聞こえてくるし，遠くでひっそりと鳴らされ殆ど聞き取れていなかったような音が，まるで主役であるかのような聞こえ方をしてくるし，ほんと，発見・再発見の宝庫だ。　ソロの二人の余りに上手すぎる歌唱に抵抗感を感じてしまう瞬間もありますが，この名演に傷をつけるようなものでは決してありません。特に管楽器に対するクレンペラーの見事な強調などを考えれば，ソロの強調も十分頷けるもの。　カラヤン，ジュリーニ，テンシュテット…名演は数多。そのどれとも違って聞こえ，そのどれもがもっていない魅力を届けてくれるクレンパラーに感謝です。

ミサ・ソレムニスとともに、その真の姿を現したドイツ・レクイエム。重厚にして速めのテンポという、この時期のクレンペラーの奇跡とも言える表現がＳＡＣＤ化によって、見事に体現されている。奇跡の前に言葉なし。
