バルツァのカルメンにカレーラスのジョゼと、まずは両主役が揃った『カルメン』だ。特にバルツァは演技力もあり、声の伸びも歌も悪くない。また、エスカミーリョのレイミー以下、他の歌手陣も穴がない。レヴァインの音楽はよく言えば軽快だが、深みには欠ける。メトのプレイヤーはいずれもうまい。ミルズによる演出はきわめてオーソドックスな上に、メトの舞台らしくセットも衣裳もともに豪華。ここではもっとも新しい1964年のアルコーア版を用いているとのことで、2幕などに聴き慣れない曲が散見する。なお、音質は悪くないのだが、1987年の収録にしては画質、特に褪色気味の色調は残念。

ドミンゴ/クライバー盤と並んでこの曲の定番であろう。カレーラスのオペラ映像はドミンゴやパバロッティに比べてかなり少ないので貴重。現在国内盤は他にカラヤンのドンカルロとスカラ座のアンドレアシェニエ以外にあるだろうか？　７３年に東京でやった椿姫、７８年のスカラ座の運命の力、７９年の東京のトスカ、８１年のパリの仮面舞踏会、８３年のウイーンのトゥーランドットは映像があるはずなのでぜひDVD化を期待したい。

ビゼーの音楽の明暗軽重を見事に描くレヴァイン。全身全霊で歌い演じる現代最高のカルメン・ホセ、バルツアとカレーラス。彼らを中心に脇役・群集まで一体となって進むドラマを、映画に劣らぬ構成で表現する映像。ＤＶＤオペラの醍醐味、ここにありという感じである。
