1981年作品。ビリー初のライヴ・アルバムは、“屋根裏部屋の歌たち”というタイトルにあるように、'77年の大ヒット作『ストレンジャー』より前に発表された初期4作から選曲されています。ビリーが最も愛し、そっと胸にしまいこんでいた珠玉の名曲たちが、ステージで新たな息吹を与えられ活き活きと甦ったのです。ここに収められた曲の数々は、'80年6〜7月に行われた全米ツアーでのライヴより収録されたもの。『ニューヨーク物語』に収録されていた「さよならハリウッド」は、ライヴ版ながらシングル・カットされ全米最高17位を記録、『コールド・スプリング・ハーバー』収録の「シーズ・ガッタ・ウェイ」は最高23位と、名曲の数々にスポット・ライトが当たりました。ソロ・デビュー10周年を飾ることとなった今作は、大ヒット曲が収録されていないライヴであるにもかかわらず、全米アルバムチャート最高8位を記録。ビリー・ジョエルのソングライターとしての抜きん出た才能を改めて確認する事となりました。

    アナログ発売当時は低価格で発売された作品。そのせいではないと思うが､ライブとして聴くと今ひとつ臨場感が乏しく、音のバランスが悪かった。リマスターでは如何に？。もちろん、ビリーの声は素晴らしい。アルバムタイトルは昔の曲に焦点を当てた作品ということにちなんだもの｡

    国内盤も輸入盤も共通の1998年ﾘﾏｽﾀｰ音源｡私の場合はUK盤を購入しました｡国内盤のBlu-Spec盤と比較すると値段が倍以上も違います｡まぁどれを聴いても音圧も音質も似たようもんですよ(笑)
