1982年作品。“僕にとっての『サージェント・ペパーズ』。とても誇りに思うアルバムさ”とビリー自身が語った話題作。全米で最高位7位を記録する。今作からは、難問に直面した時の姿勢を歌った「プレッシャー」（全米20位）不景気にあえぐ街に暮らしながらも希望を捨てない決意を込めた「アレンタウン」（全米17位）ベトナム戦争の帰還兵と、その後遺症を取り上げた「グッドナイト・サイゴン」等がシングル・カット。主にアメリカの問題点を問いかけたメッセージ性の強いアルバムに仕上がりました。凶弾に倒れたジョン・レノンへの思いがそうさせたのか、ビートルズ的な「ローラ」や、声にジョンが乗り移ったかのような「スカンジナヴィアン・スカイ」など印象的な歌も収録しています。

当時の音楽業界の流行を無視して、堂々と自ら創りたい音楽をその音楽的地位に甘んじる事無く仕上げていったビリーは偉いと思うし、さすがである。内容は彼の最高傑作と評価出来るもので味わいも深い。単にヒットメーカーで無い事が証明できるトータルアルバム。

本当は、もっと売れてもいいアルバムだった。FM雑誌のビルボードチャートを毎週チェックしながらあまりランキングが上昇しないのを歯痒い思いで見ていたのを思い出す。サウンドとしてはこれまでのどのアルバムよりも完成されているし、メロディも若干重たい感じはあるが美しいものばかり。好みから言うと、T-5が出色。シングルカットこそされなかったが、今でもコンサートでは取り上げられるくらいBillyにとっては会心作だったのだろう。T-4やシングルヒットしたT-1、3も名曲。

アレンタウンは当時流れていたＭＰＶを思い出しますね。全体的には重く沈鬱な印象もありますが、彼の社会への思いが詰まった作品だと思います。私はＭ①から④の流れがすごくいいなと感じてますよ。この後、やたら能天気な作品を出しましたが、こちらの方が好きですね。
