スイトナーさん位、田園と言うイメージにぴったりくる人はいない。やすやすと、自然に音楽を生み出せる、心優しき才人。イタリアとオーストリアの血が流れていて、特に当時の東ドイツと日本で活躍、ドイツ音楽の演奏、ウィーン音楽の演奏にはぴったり、名演の数々を聴かせてくれた。渋いけれども、ロマンティック、結構辛口な所もある。日本コロンビア、DENON レーベル PCM 録音の代表盤、’８０年録。私には、慈愛に満ちたワルター、コロンビアとスイトナーさん、ベルリン・シュターツカペレの演奏が、あれば、田園は、他は、必要ない、と、思ってしまう、唯一の例外は、チェリビダッケ。バーンスタイン、ウィーンフィルも良いが、私には、スイトナーさんが、筆頭。余計な事は、一切してない抑制も聴いた丁寧、情感も深い名演奏。ライヴ、実演でも聴いてみたかったが、かなわぬ夢となってしまった。代わりに、スイトナーさんの数々の名演奏、モーツァルト、べートヴェン、ブラームス、マーラー、ブルックナー、ストラヴィンスキーなど、大事に聴き続けます。落ち着き、味わい深い。

田園の最高峰は、このスウィトナーかコリン・デイビス＆ドレスデンだと思います。

これは、ベートーヴェンの「田園」という交響曲の素晴らしさをダイレクトに味わうことができる自然体の名演だ。この演奏には、聴き手を驚かすような強烈な個性があるわけではない。テンポも速すぎもせず、遅すぎもせず、中庸のテンポであり、アッチェレランドなどもいささかも見られない。それでいて、のっぺりとした凡庸な印象はいささかも与えず、ベートーヴェンの美しい音楽の魅力を心行くまで安心して聴かせることに成功している点を高く評価したい。録音は１９８０年であり、この当時は東ドイツという国が存在し、ベルリン・シュターツカペレにも、現代にはすっかりと失われてしまった渋いジャーマンサウンドが生きていた。本演奏には、スウィトナーの墺オーストリア人ならではいくぶん柔和なアプローチと、ベルリン・シュターツカペレの重厚で重心の低いサウンドが、最高の形で融合し、硬軟併せ持つ至高の名演に仕上がったとも言える。ベルリン・イエス・キリスト教会の豊かな残響を活かした名録音も素晴らしい。併録の２曲の序曲も名演であり、本盤がレコード・アカデミー賞を受賞したのも当然のことであると考える。Blu-spec-CD化によって、音質がより鮮明になったのも大変嬉しい。
