Hayao Miyazaki's most "adult" film is a fantasy about a man-turned-pig Marco, who once was a handsome Facist flyer. He is now the best of pilots who work for hire to defend transports from pirates. He is viewed with awe by people and also known as Porco Rosso. One day an American cad Kurtis appears in front of Marco to propose a rematch, but he is not the only one on the trail of Marco.

飛行艇を操る空賊が横行していた、第一次大戦後のイタリアはアドリア海。賞金稼ぎの飛行艇乗りであるポルコ・ロッソは、空賊たちには天敵の存在。自分の顔を魔法で豚に変えてしまったポルコを何とかやっつけたいと一計を案じた空賊たちは、アメリカからスゴ腕の飛行艇乗りを呼び寄せ、彼に一騎打ちを迫る。

景色が綺麗で、癒されました。なぜ豚になったかが明かされない事で考えさせられる作品でした。

ユニークなやりとりや話の成り行きが多いが、作品の雰囲気としてとてもメランコリックで人生の哀愁に満ちている。この映画が理解できない人は精神的にまだまだ未熟なんだと思う。ポルコが人間の顔に戻るのはきっと「人間も捨てたもんじゃない」ってふっと思ったときなんだろうな。最後のシーンはとても胸に沁みる。その他、音楽や声優、美術まで何もかも一流だと思う。ジブリの中でも出色。

空賊とそれを取り締まる賞金稼ぎという発想がユニーク。各々の飛行艇で地中海の島にある酒場に集うところもお洒落。主人公がなぜ豚さんになったのかは明かされない。視聴者に独自の解釈を委ねる手法だ。ボギーを意識したような服装や大戦間近のイタリアを舞台にしていたり、大恐慌で喘いでいるなど当時の時代背景や文化に触れているのも面白い。
